One of the more interesting aspects of living and working in the same building is that I have no real sense of getting away from my job-so much of my personal time is spend with the same people that I serve-therefore this position-this ministry is often staring me in the face.
Something that I always look forward to doing with some of the residents that I serve is to watch Grey’s Anatomy in my RDs apartment. I really do love watching that show-but I love hearing the other 15 girls that I watch it with scream at the television characters even more.
Anyway-the theme or question that the show presented this week is one that I find incredibly relevant to Residence Life and to my position as a senior in college. This week presented the question of “Who Are You?-can you still be you if you cannot do the things that you love” The show presented a character who is about to lose his career of dancing because of a medical condition-this situation presented a platform for the conversation of whether a person’s career profession or skills define who they are.
The show came to the conclusion that Yes, a person’s ability to use their skills does define them…
As a Christian, I have to say that this conclusion is mistaken.
It is not okay for a Christian to define themselves by their position in any organization or career. A person’s identity has to be completely wrapped up in God. He has to be the standard, and the line.
Life is long, positions change, people change and skills are gained and lost. Before I begin, a career I need to have this idea firmly within my sites. I need to know that I am still a valued child of God-even if I end up doing nothing that I have planned to do with my life, and I need to know that I may not serve God in the same capacity for all of my days-that is okay too!
On the other hand, it is also important to remember that God does give his followers blessings and gifts so that they can serve him. He calls us to use what he has given us! This means enthusiastically searching for opportunities to use our gifts to the glory of God. We were made to worship God with everything that he has given us!
So…In ministry, we have to put these two ideas together. We have to use what God has given us without letting ourselves confuse our jobs, positions and skills with our identities.
