The problem with blogging and writing journals for a person in my position is the fact that I am often put into the position of sharing lessons and observations without detailed illustrations!
Such is the way of confidentiality.
So…my lack of example is quite intentional.
This week, I was placed in the position of using my words to help define an experience for a resident. This is not a unique experience for me, but it is always something that catches my attention as a public relations and advertising major.
In my major, I have been taught to “spin” ideas and to sell “products” in a compelling and memorable manner. I can easily acknowledge how this applies to my position as an RA when I am planning and advertising for Floor Event. My major has a clear purpose when I am trying to communicate the fact that leaving one’s dirty dishes in the community bathroom is rude…but I am convinced that those deeper one-on-one conversations is the place where my degree may play its most beautiful role.
When I am talking to someone who is sad, confused or worried…I get to sell truth. I get to tell my chica that she matters to God. I can PURSUADE her that God is holding her future in the palm of his hands and that he will take care of her. No, it is not my job to change her thought or to change her…but I am blessed with the opportunity to remind her of truths that she might have forgotten. I can comfort her with communication.
